Donald Trump, the former president, is apparently being advised to take a back seat and wait for a subpoena by Proud Boys members.
Alan Feuer of the New York Times said that Proud Boys members who have been charged by the government with participating in a seditious plot have stated that they “expect to subpoena Donald Trump as a witness during the trial.”
Many other January 6th defendants have claimed that they stormed into the Capitol and brutally fought with police officers because it was what the former president wanted them to do, even though it’s unclear why members of the gang would want Trump to testify on their behalf.
Feuer, however, is dubious about the defendants’ ability to successfully compel Trump to testify.
Attempts to score Trump as a witness in the past “haven’t flown with judges in other J6 cases, so we’ll see where it goes,” he said. “At his own trial last year, an exterminator from Ohio attempted to subpoena Trump. The court stopped it.”
Members of the Proud Boys are facing more pressure after the government earlier this week obtained convictions for seditious conspiracy against four more members of the Oath Keepers militia.
Prosecutors contended that these individuals participated in a plot to obstruct the peaceful transfer of power in order to keep Trump in the White House.
