WWNC – As China puts pressure on the island that is democratically controlled, the United States may soon offer Taiwan billions of dollars in military finance, expedite the transfer of weapons, and improve military coordination.
The $817 billion National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, on which discussion started on Tuesday, contains a large portion of the comprehensive “Taiwan Policy Act of 2022,” according to the Senate. Beijing was outraged when the Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed the Taiwan measure in September.
China has never abandoned using force to annex Taiwan and views it as part of its territory.
It was unclear whether Taiwan-related provisions would be included in the final NDAA, but senators and Senate aides predicted many would become law if the NDAA is passed as anticipated this year.
