Darwin’s journey began when timber workers inadvertently felled a tree, unaware that a mother koala and her baby were nestled among its branches. The 250-gram joey was rushed to the Southern Ash Wildlife Shelter, where he was placed in the care of dedicated koala expert Colleen Wood.
“Koalas are incredibly maternal,” Wood explained. “It’s remarkable how mothers often protect their babies at all costs, even sacrificing their own safety.” Despite the harrowing circumstances, Darwin miraculously survived the fall.
Under Wood’s watchful eye, Darwin thrived. Fed every four hours and comforted by his teddy bear companion, George, the young koala quickly gained weight and grew stronger. However, as Darwin matured, Wood realized that he needed a real-life friend to help him learn the essential skills for survival in the wild.
“It’s a funny sight,” Wood shared. “People often double-take when they see me feeding Darwin, thinking George is a real koala. But there’s a tiny, furry creature hiding beneath the teddy bear!”
As Darwin continued to grow, Wood knew it was time to prepare him for his eventual release into the wild. The plan was to keep him at the shelter for approximately 10 months, allowing him to develop the necessary skills and confidence. To track his progress and ensure his well-being, Darwin would be fitted with a tag, along with other rescued koalas.
“There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a koala you’ve nursed since she was a joey raise her own young in the bush,” Wood expressed.
Unfortunately, the journey back into the wild is not without its challenges. According to Wood, approximately 78% of injured or orphaned koalas that are released successfully survive. Habitat destruction, fires, and the drying of the landscape due to climate change pose significant threats to koala populations.
“We need more research to understand the specific needs of koalas in Victoria,” Wood emphasized. “The threats they face are increasing, and we must do all we can to protect them.”
As joey season approached, Wood anticipated a surge in admissions at the shelter. Road hits, dog attacks, tree-felling accidents, and bushfires often result in orphaned or injured koalas. Last year, the center cared for over 200 baby koalas, and the numbers continue to grow.
Darwin’s story is a testament to the resilience of nature and the unwavering dedication of those who work tirelessly to protect endangered species. With the support of caring individuals like Colleen Wood, there is hope for the future of koalas and their delicate ecosystems.
